Paolo Petrilli "Motta del Lupo" Cacc'e Mmitte di Lucera '20

Opening a bottle of Paolo Petrilli “Motta del Lupo,” one almost expects a tiny Italian grandmother to pop out of the bottle yelling, “Mangia!” That’s because this Italian wine is truly Italian. It comes from one of the culinary capitals of Italy. Puglia is a dream for any Italian cook, and the bounty of produce is second to none. Just ask legendary tomato farmer Paolo Petrilli. His heirloom tomatoes are sought after throughout Italy and the world. His wine is deserving of the same attention. Paolo’s vineyards, 11 hectares in total, are located near Lucera, and all are farmed organically, just like his prized tomatoes.

Petrilli is a specialist with Nero di Troia, an aromatic variety that often offers lots of fruit. For his “everyday” value called “Motta del Lupo,” Petrilli blends Nero di Troia (50%) with Montepulciano (20%), Sangiovese (15%), and the white variety Bombino (15%). It is a wine that shows the warm region it comes from but in a way that few in Puglia manage to do.

“Motta del Lupo” offers beautiful aromas reminiscent of a strawberry fruit leather, along with hints of blackberry, lavender, violet, and white pepper. The palate is medium plus bodied, with soft tannins, bright fruit, and an array of complex spice notes. This is a perfectly balanced wine, with 13% alcohol, a modest level for what you might expect from Puglia. Drink this with whatever that tiny Italian grandmother tells you to pair it with. It’s a versatile, delicious, outstanding value.
