    Obalo Rioja "San Roque" '19

    Obalo Rioja "San Roque" '19

Bodegas Obalo is a relative newcomer to Rioja, especially when you consider that wine has been made in the region for more than 2,000 years and the winery was founded in 2006. Obalo works with small, family-owned vineyards that range in age form 40 to 90 years old, mostly in the Rioja Alavesa subregion, and many located in terraces carved out of the Sierra Cantabrian foothills, along the Ebro River. While Rioja was named for the Rio Oja, it’s the Ebro that is most influential in the region, having carved out vineyards that have been growing prized fruit for centuries. If there were one word that characterizes the overarching style of wines from Alavesa, one of Rioja’s three subregions, it’s freshness, which many attribute to the area’s high proportion of calcareous clay.

Made from 100% Tempranillo, the primary grape of red Rioja wines, Obalo’s “San Roque” is what many would call a modern style of Rioja. The winery uses French oak rather than American, the latter having helped define the classic Rioja style developed in the 19th century. “San Roque” is fermented in French oak barrels, half of which are new wood, and then aged for three months in the same barrels. But rather than the darker-fruited, more extracted profile that often comes with riper, more heavily oaked styles of Tempranillo, Obalo is focused on bringing out the bright red-fruited character of Tempranillo. The wine is lively and fresh rather, with savory notes of spice, tobacco, and earth complementing the aromas of strawberry and cherry. Try it with a sheep’s milk cheese such as the firm and buttery Manchego, though young, well-balanced wines such as “San Roque” are an excellent complement to any cheeseboard. Chorizo, lamb, enchiladas, and tomato-based dishes and stews are great pairings as well.
