This dry red blend comes from our friends at Selection Massale, a natural wine importer that has a series of claret wines from around the world. The claret style was popularized centuries ago in England and originally referred to a red Bordeaux blend, but today it’s used more broadly to refer to a lighter-style red blend. Made by Mateus Nicolau de Almeida, “O Tinto Perfeito” is another of his wine that exemplifies what’s great about Portuguese wines. He also makes another wine you may have seen here at the shop, “Trans-Douro Express,” and has several other projects and collaborations throughout the country as well. His wines seem to live on the edge of rusticity but always with a soft elegance. He focuses on native varieties and has done incredible work to ensure the Douro Valley’s range of terroirs, cultures, and personalities are represented individually. All of his wines are fermented with native yeasts.
While the blend and origin of “O Tinto Perfeito” changes, the bottle label is consistent from one iteration to the next, designed in a style similar to that of the label from Broc Cellars’ “Le Clairet–The Perfect Red.” This edition of “O Tinto Perfeito” is made from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and a small amount of the white variety Malvasia. The wine is macerated for 10 days and aged in steel tanks, then bottled unfiltered and unfined. The aromas range from raspberry and cherry to dark plum and blackberry, with notes of dried savory spices and a bit of earthy. It’s made in a lighter style but shows as medium bodied on the palate. Chill it lightly and give it a bit of air before serving.
