    Nerantzi Assyrtiko '20

    Northern Greece

    Nerantzi Assyrtiko '20

The Nerantzi Assyrtiko is a standout among this month’s selections, a wine for which we’d willingly ply the waters of the Aegean Sea and then trek through northern Greece to reach. While the Nerantzi family had a history of making wine for their own consumption, they didn’t officially began producing wine as a domaine until the late 20th century. They now organically farm about 11 hectares of vineyards in the Serres district, near the border of Macedonia and Thrace.

Working with his daughter Eva, vigneron Nerantzi Mitropoulos is focused on indigenous Greek varieties. He’s been described as taking a “locavore approach” to winemaking, which includes using native yeasts for fermentation and, for some wines, local oak for cooperage, to express the region’s unique character. This bottle is made solely of Assyrtiko, a variety that stars in the white wines produced on the island of Santorini. It’s thought that the limestone soils in which Nerantzi is planting Assyrtiko coupled with the climate of Serres (one of Greece’s coldest regions) yield an expression of Assyrtiko distinct from that made from Santorini’s volcanic soils and warmer climate.

The Nerantzi is fermented in stainless steel, with a minimal amount of sulfur to protect the wine. Medium bodied and textured yet without an impression of heaviness, it has notes of yellow pear, white nectarine, white flowers, white mushroom, and lemon zest, as well as nutty and slightly yeasty notes. It’s mineral driven, with a saline quality that brightens the wine, reminding us of the way salt deepens and brightens the flavors of what it’s added to. Pair it with salads, seafood, and savory dishes. It’s a great alternative for a Chablis lover. If you haven’t yet tried Assyrtiko, the Nerantzi is a marvelous introduction.
