Emilia Romagna
What is often misunderstood as a sweet sparkling wine is finally becoming more well known for its dry, versatile qualities. Lambrusco is the name of a variety that comes from Emilia-Romagna. There are seven major varieties, and different parts of Emilia-Romagna are better growing areas for the different types of Lambrusco. Despite the differences, if there is one thing to know, it is that Lambrusco is a sparkling red wine produced in the Charmat method. Why put bubbles in a red? This is from Emilia-Romagna, where everything is ALL about the food. Think of the food that comes from this region—savory, rich, often favoring a red wine—Parmigiano Reggiano, balsamic vinegar from Modena, prosciutto di Parma, an incredible array of pasta, pork from chestnut-fed pigs.
Monte delle Vigne is a producer situated near Parma, near the Taro river. It was founded by Andrea Ferrari, in 1983, who realized the unique potential of the area. Today, he is recognized as one of top producers near Parma, working from a single estate and farming organically. “Selezione” is produced from Lambrusco Maestri. The grapes are hand picked, and fermentation lasts about 20 days. There are lovely notes of high-toned red fruits, including dark cherry and cranberry, and the wine is fresh on the palate, with soft tannins on the entry, and a bright juicy finish. It isn’t just traditional Italian food that pairs with Lambrusco—spiced lamb ribs are also a fantastic pairing.
