This is another hit from a house favorite. Monte delle Vigne is in Emilia-Romagna, located on gentle hills that slope down from a height of 300 meters to the right bank of the river Taro, with deep soils rich in clay and limestone, and night breezes that lower summer temperatures—all creating an exceptionally unique terroir. Perhaps most famous for its Lambrusco and Malvasia-based white wines, Monte delle Vigne is also doing some outstanding work with red varieties, including Barbera.
The 2019 Barbera has everything we look for in Italian reds: a great fruit profile without being too ripe or jammy, balanced with earthy and savory notes. It’s juicy and refreshing but has enough grip to make you thirsty for another sip. Surely you can enjoy this bottle on its own, but an eggplant Parmesan sandwich or bowl of sausage risotto would take it to another level. This is a fantastic table wine that drinks way above its price point.
