Miguel Louro Wines is the exciting project of Miguel Louro Jr. If you recognize the Louro name, that is because Miguel's father is the well-recognized owner/winemaker of the iconic Alentejo estate called Quinta do Mouro. Miguel Sr. has not let his children rest of his laurels, instead challenging them to go out and blaze their own path. Miguel Jr. has certainly earned his stripes, as the current enologist for S.A. Prum in the Mosel Valley, and returning to his roots with the Miguel Louro Wines from Alentejo.
At his father's winery in Estremoz, Miguel Jr. primarily makes white white. In fact, we recently featured one of the them in a past wine club, "Primeiro Nome." This month, we are showcasing the one red wine that he currently makes. And as Primeiro Nome means "first name" we follow up with Apelido, which translates to "last name," although it is the first in the line-up, characterized for its freshness.
This is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Aragonez and Trincadeira. This wine is truly captivating as the blend of both red and dark fruit hit you at different moments - red fruit that is bright and round on the nose, translates into a palate full of dark fruit. The herbal tones of Touriga Franca are unmistakable as it adds a savory edge to the wine. With bright acidity alongside these fun, fresh and juicy flavors, you will come back for more, sip after sip. This is a great accompaniment to smoked ingredients whether it be meat, fish or vegetables, squash, and pork-based dishes.
