Manoir de la Tête Rouge "Bagatelle" Saumur Rouge '20

The estate of Le Manoir de la Tête Rouge was built in the 17th century at the foot of the hill of Le Puy-Notre-Dame. This is the highest point in the region, about 20 kilometers south of Saumur, and it is exceptional enough to have gained its own geographic designation. The wines from here tend to be more concentrated and structured than those from other areas in the region. Protected from heavy rainfalls, the Cabernet Franc grown here can achieve better ripeness and be harvested later in the season. Guillaume Reynouard took charge of the property with 10 hectares of vineyards in 1995, and the vines are planted on the best clay-limestone soils of Saumur. In 1998, they vineyards were converted to organic viticulture, with the first organic vintage made in 2001, and a subsequent biodynamic certification in 2010. He now cultivates 18 hectares of land.

The grapes for the 2020 “Bagatelle” were hand harvested from six plots and fully destemmed. The fruit macerated for three weeks and fermented with native yeasts, then matured in concrete vats until bottling in spring. The wine shows beautiful wild strawberry notes and cracked pepper on the nose, leaning more towards crunchy and brambly fruit than the green notes sometimes found with Cabernet Franc. Medium bodied, the wine is soft up front on the palate, with medium fine-grained tannins on the midpalate. Fruity, fresh, and charming, try it with charcuterie, a cheese plate, or classic French dishes such as gigot d’agneau.
