Malabaila Roero Arneis "Le Tre" '20

Malabaila Roero Arneis "Le Tre" '20

It’s hard to think of anyone whom this wine won’t satisfy. It’s classic Arneis—bone dry on the palate, with notes of white peach, yellow apple, and fresh green herbs as well as a gentle floral quality. The Malabaila Arneis is from Roero, which sits on the northwestern bank of the Tanaro River, opposite Barolo and Barbaresco, where Nebbiolo reigns. Indigenous to Piedmont, Arneis means “little rascal” in Piemontese and was once on the brink of extinction, in the old days occasionally blended with Nebbiolo though considered better suited as food for unwelcome birds in the vineyards. The variety shares some similarities with Chenin Blanc and the Spanish grape Xarel.lo, but it has gentler acidity and a more saline quality than either of those. Made in stainless steel to preserve its aromatics, it’s on the light- to medium-bodied end of the spectrum, with a touch of bitter almond on the finish. The Malabaila Arneis shines as an aperitif, or try it with lighter meat or seafood dishes.
