    Lydian Cabernet Sauvignon '17

In wine retail there is a never-ending search to find an American Cabernet Sauvignon that offers value with integrity.  You can walk across the street from my store and visit Target, a store that offers plenty of under $20 Cabernet Sauvignon. Most of them have a fanciful name. Most of them were "crafted" probably after going through a focus group. Most of them have enzymes added to them to make them smell or taste a certain way. We go out of our way to avoid those.  The best way to find a Cabernet Sauvignon value, is to go to the regions that can offer affordability. The next step is to find producer that you trust. So when we were first introduced to the Avennia wines from Washington State, and heard about their value wines under the "Lydian" label, we knew we had finally found something in our long standing search. Avennia is the relative newcomer, with its first release 8 years. ago. Former DeLille Cellars alum teamed up to create their vision of a great Washington State producer. Focusing on both Bordeaux varietals and Rhône varietals, they are sourcing fruit from some of the best vineyards in Eastern Washington.  While the focus at Avenia is on vineyard driven wines, they have also introduced a duo of wines under the "Lydian" label. Their  goal to produce fun, value driven reds that highlight the Washington terroir has been achieved through these wines. The 2017 "Lydian" Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of predominantly Cabernet, blended with a small proportion of Merlot. The fruit is sourced from several vineyards in the Columbia Valley. The grapes are hand harvested, fermented in tank before being aged in French oak, 30% of it new. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon that you can simply have a glad of after a long day of work. It offers plenty of rich black currant, dark cherry and dark chocolate notes on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with well integrated tannins. Perfect for when you feel like a bold glass of Cabernet or pair it alongside a seared hangar steak. A terrific value.
