Lagler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Axpoint" '18

Lagler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Axpoint" '18

The beauty of the Niederöstereich is on full display as you drive alongside the Danube River looking upward at the steep terraced vineyards that loom majestically over the valley.  The Lagler family has lived and farmed in the Wachau region of Austria since 1789. Based in the idyllic village of Spitz, the family switched from selling their fruit to producing wine in the 1970's. Today, Karl Lagler Jr is the head of the 13 hectare estate, having taking over from his parents Karl Sr. and Elizabeth.  Lagler Jr. makes an excellent range of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Neuberger from top vineyard sites. This excellent Grüner Veltliner comes from the famous Axpoint vineyard in the village of Spitz. Records of the vineyard date back to 1234. Some other famous names that produce wines from the 12.8 ha of Axpoint include Hirtzberger and Domaine Wachau. The soil in the vineyard is loess, which consists mainly of calcerous silt. These fine particles of sand and clay were deposited here by the winds. The 2018 Lagler "Axpoint" Smaragd offers beautiful aromatics of ripe peach, melon and white pepper. This has medium weight, more rich stone fruit notes on the palate, but finishes with mineral notes and good acidity. This is a great winter white wine. It can be paired alongside a roasted pork tenderloin. It is a great value.
