Portugal continues to produce some of the world's most outstanding wine values. For many years now, we've been extolling the virtue of the terrific wines of Lagar de Darei, a small producer in the Dão region of Portugal. As noted before, we believe that the Dão is a region of immense potential. Warm days, and very cold nights bring wines with both ripeness and freshness.
Located in the microscopic village of Darei, José Ruivo founded the winery by accident. In an attempt to “retire” he bought a beautiful property that consisted of several buildings, a main house, and an area where he could produce a small amount of wine. As is often the case, it turned into a full-fledged wine business, with his son Carlos joining him. The family planted vines but also purchases some fruit from local growers, all of which are sustainably farmed.
The “Colheita” Tinto is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, which is classically grown here, blended with 30% Tinta Roríz (Tempranillo), 15% Jaen (Mencía), and 15% Alfocheiro. The vines grow in the Dão’s classic, granite-rich soils. The wine is a pure expression of the Dão’s climatic conditions—concentrated notes of fresh blackberry, blueberry, and mulberry, with a fruit compote quality, and subtle tones of violets and cinnamon, finishing with a mineral tinge. This great value is also a great crowd-pleaser!
