La Comarcal "Delmoro" Blanco '20
It’s surprising that in a wine-producing country as well known as Spain, there are still emerging regions to be discovered. One such region is Valencia, where Javi Revert and Victor Marqués of La Comarcal Viticultores offer a perfect introduction to the exciting white wines the area has to offer. The duo met while working at Celler del Roure, one of the leading wineries in the region. In 2017 they launched their own winery, focusing on grapes from old mountain vineyards and local grape varieties.
Delmoro Blanco comes from vineyards near the village of Venta del Moro, a blend of young and old vines from the indigenous Merseguera and old-vine Chardonnay. Vineyards are planted on limestone-rich calcareous clay soil at an altitude of around 600 meters, with a continental climate heavily influenced by the Mediterranean Sea. After a rigorous selection in the vineyard, each variety is hand-harvested separately, and whole bunches are pressed in a pneumatic press. Chardonnay is fermented in used 500-liter foudres with native yeasts, followed by six months in the same barrels on the lees without bâtonnage. Merseguera is fermented with native yeasts and aged in concrete tanks for six months. The two varieties are then blended and rested before a very light filtration and then bottling. The wine is unfined.

Delmoro Blanco starts out with lovely floral aromas coupled by hints of apple and pear. There is stone fruit on the palate with herbal notes and bright acidity, which brings a welcomed freshness to the wine. Chardonnay adds texture, and the finish is long and salty. This is a serious bottle for the price that would do well on the dinner table but would go just as nicely with friends and conversation on the back patio (once spring finally arrives, that is).
