    Kientzler Chasselas '20

    Kientzler Chasselas '20

Chasselas fans, do I have an incredible value for you! The above sentence is what we “cork dorks” call a wine joke. We, like you, know that there aren’t actually a whole lot of die-hard Chasselas fans around. But we hope that after tasting this wine you become a member of the Chasselas fan club. If you are already a member, you likely live in Switzerland, which is the birthplace of Chasselas. The variety has been in the vineyards there for over 400 years, and the Swiss often call the variety Fendant. Chasselas has made its way elsewhere, and in this case to the vineyards of Thierry and Éric Kientzler in Alsace. Based in Ribeauvillé, the Kientzlers have been growing grapes for five generations. Out of the almost 14 hectares of vines they own, more than four are classified as grand cru.

While Chasselas is not a classic variety of the region, the Kientzler family does this grape justice. The grapes come from two parcels in a single vineyard called Forst, near Ribeauvillé. The average age of the vines is 35 years. Kientzler uses no oak at the winery—everything is made in stainless steel tanks. The result is a wonderfully aromatic white, full of notes of fresh lychee, lime zest, and flowers. On the palate, the wine finishes bone dry and mineral, with some zesty herb notes. It’s an excellent wine for drinking with a wide range of foods, so try it with turkey or even roasted pork loin.
