Joseph Voillot Pommard "Les Pézerolles," 1er Cru '19
A fifth-generation domaine, Joseph Voillot makes wines from top vineyards in Volnay and Pommard, two appellations in the Côte de Beaune region producing red wine only. Joseph retired from the domaine in 1995, and the managing director is now Etienne Chaix, his grandson. Working with 23 acres of vines, the team at the domaine harvests by hand, and the wines are made with destemmed fruit and moved gently into barrel, with the help of gravity. While the wines are matured in new oak barrels, the amount never exceeds 30 percent, and sulfur additions are kept to a minimum. The wines are focused, showing a finesse that comes from the vineyards and the fruit, rather than from excessive oak and extraction.
The fruit for “Les Pézerolles,” a premier cru vineyard at the north end of Pommard, is from one acre of vines planted in 1963 on a mid-slope area of limestone and marl soils, above the Épenots vineyard. (The name of the vineyard is thought to come from the 12th-century French word for chickpea, pois chiche, which was likely being cultivated next to the vineyard.) This is indeed a more powerful expression of Pinot Noir, highlighting the variety’s red and black berry notes. This is a wine that can be expected to age for ten years or more.
