    Spain is a treasure trove of indigenous varietals and passionate wine makers that are dedicated to reviving the history of long forgotten or underused varietals. José Antonio García and his wife Julia Peña García returned to their native Bierzo, to reclaim their family history and bring back to life family owned vineyard sites. In total they own 22 hectares of vineyards, the majority in the region of Bierzo. In Bierzo, the varietal of focus is called Mencía, and the dynamic duo produce three different red wines from this varietal. Today, I am focusing on the newest wine in their line-up, an obscure red varietal called Prieto Picudo. The grapes are sourced from a site called El Canal, which is planted at 850m above sea level. The vine age in the vineyard ranges between 20 and 70 years old. Planted in rocky soil that have large “galets” or stones, the vineyard has proven itself to be capable of providing a complex version of an often misunderstood grape.  José Antonio and Julia destem 50% of the grapes, and ferment in a mixture of stainless steel, cement and open top barrels, all with indigenous yeasts. The grape skins undergo a 30 day maceration, and the wine is racked into used French oak barrels for 6 months of aging. This is easily the finest example of Prieto Picudo that I’ve tasted. It jumps out of the glass with notes of wild strawberry, plum, mineral and spice. It is medium-bodied, with soft tannins, but also bright acidity and wonderfully silky fruit. Pair this with earthy dishes, braised meats or hard cheeses. A terrific Spanish value!
