Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir "Whistling Ridge - Long Acre" '18
Marcus Goodfellow is one of the great winemakers of Oregon. I say this, not because he is a long time friend of mine, but rather by comparing him to his peers throughout the state, and throughout the United States for that matter. As a former Oregonian, I was right there in the beginning, as Marcus made his first wine in the non-temperature controlled basement of his house. Things have gotten a lot more serious since then.
He produces around 4,000 cases per year of largely Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, from some of the very finest family owned, dry-farmed vineyards in the Willamette Valley. We always carry wines from Goodfellow in the store, but some are more rare than others.
If there is a vineyard Marcus loves to produce wine from, it is the Whistling Ridge Vineyard in the Ribbon Ridge AVA of the Willamette Valley. Marcus being a long time fan of Burgundy cares about the elegance this vineyard can provide. “Long Acre” is a specific block in the Whistling Ridge vineyard, planted in 1996. He produced just 110 cases of this spectacular 2018 “Long Acre.”
Here are his tasting notes: “Classic aromas of Whistling Ridge: elegantly perfumed, tons of potpourri notes, red apple skin, red currant, clove, cinnamon stick, amaro spices, orange peel, dried flowers, menthol, and sage. The nose is lovely: expressive, very fine and elegant. On the palate tart red fruits dominate, juicy, with cranberry, sour cherry, and currants. Linear, pretty, weightless, the bright acids and fine firm tannins are well balanced and speak to an excellent aging profile.”
If you are looking for a really special bottle of Pinot Noir for the dinner table, this is it.
