Founded in 2005 by Giuseppe Russo, and named in honor of his late father, the Girolamo Russo estate comprises about 18 hectares of vineyards planted on the ancient lava flows on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. The vines range in age from 60 to 100 years old, and are planted at 650 to 800 meters above sea level. Giuseppe farms the vineyards organically and makes the wines himself. Working with indigenous varieties, he vinifies each parcel separately with native yeast fermentations. His wines are vivid examples of their terroir.
“’A Rina” is made from 90% Nerello Mascalese (the dominant red variety of Etna Rosso) and 10% Nerello Cappuccio, from various contrade (single vineyards): San Lorenzo, Feudo, Calderara Sottana, Feudo di Mezzo. The wine is fermented for ten days in stainless steel tanks and small open vats. The wine is matured for 12 months in 2,600-liter Slavonian oak casks and concrete tanks, then aged in bottle for 6 months.
The wine offers notes of ripe cherry, plum, dried earth, and tobacco. Medium bodied on the palate, it is fresh and supple, with lively acidity that helps balance the fruit and tannins throughout the long finish. A pleasure to drink now but we’d expect this wine to age quite well over the next few years.
