    G.D. Vajra "Rosabella” Rosato '23

    G.D. Vajra "Rosabella” Rosato '23

The Vajras are one of the most notable yet quiet families known for making Barolo. With some 40 hectares under vine, the estate is an independent winery, entirely family owned. It is steeped in tradition and based just outside the village that gives its name to the appellation. Aldo Vajra took over the estate in 1968 and soon acquired the first organic certification of the region (1971), then created private biotype selections (selezioni massali) of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto. The family continues to focus on improving biodiversity both in the vineyards and around them, and Aldo has used the practice of massal selection to regenerate some of the vineyards, helping nurture their health and uniqueness.

“Rosabella” is Vajra’s still rosé, made solely from Nebbiolo. The grapes are picked early, from young vineyards close to the winery, and undergo a gentle maceration to help preserve the grape’s aromatics. Half of the Nebbiolo underwent saignée (a short skin contact at low temperature), and the remaining fruit was pressed gently to minimize extraction. “Rosabella” was aged briefly in stainless steel tanks at low temperature before bottling, preserving its aromatics and freshness.
