    G.D. Vajra Barbera / Freisa '18

    G.D. Vajra Barbera / Freisa '18

As the story goes, this wine was historically one that the Vaira family (who used to spell its name with an “i”) enjoyed for themselves, and that had earned a reputation for spreading cheer among other families and guests. It was the grandfather of Aldo Vaira, head of the family-owned winery since the 1970s, who took enough pride in the wine to decide that it deserved to be bottled and labeled, first releasing it in 1970, a rarity for a “table” wine in those years.

The Vajras are one of the most notable yet quiet winemaking families in the area. Under Aldo’s management, the winery became the first in the region to gain organic certification, in 1971. The family continues to focus on improving biodiversity both in the vineyards and around them, and Aldo has used the practice of massal selection to regenerate some of the vineyards, helping nurture their health and uniqueness.

The Barbara/Freisa is made from a vineyard planted with both those varieties, and the blend is about 55%/45%, combining the charms of each variety. If you are new to the rare yet historic grape Freisa, think of it as a wild and more rustic cousin of Nebbiolo, a variety to which it is in fact related. Much like Nebbiolo, it has high acidity and tannins, making it a good partner for Barbera, which tend to have light tannins. The result is a refreshing, juicy wine with berry aromas and notes of sour cherry, sweet spices, anise, herbs, and earth.

Try it with a classic Piedmontese dish such as braised short ribs or meat-filled agnolotti del plin, or even Peking-style duck.
