    Frecciarossa Pinot Nero "Carillo" '20

    Frecciarossa Pinot Nero "Carillo" '20

Just south of the Po River, in the region of Lombardy, Oltrepò Pavese is home to producers focusing on high-quality still and sparkling wines. Its hills—ideal for the production of fine wine—lie at the foot of the Apennine mountains, and its subsoils are characterized primarily by pebbles, sandstone, and clay, also ideal for the cultivation of fine wine grapes. Frecciarossa is one of Oltrepò Pavese’s historic estates, tracing its roots back to the 18th century. The villa that stands on the property today was first built in the 19th century, but it wasn’t until the late 1980s that the Odero family began to shift its focus to producing fine wines. By the 2000s, the winery had become a regular winner of the prestigious Three Glass award from the Gambero Rosso (the publication’s top honor).

Currently, the Frecciarossa estate covers nearly 25 hectares, 20 of which are planted to vine. Grape varieties include Riesling Renano (Rhine Riesling), Pinot Nero, Coratina, Barbera, Uva Rara, and Merlot. Farming practices are aimed at finding the right balance of vigor and yield in the vineyards.

“Carillo” is 100% Pinot Nero and a great introduction to Frecciarossa’s bottlings. It’s a fresh wine, made to be drunk young and served with a slight chill. The nose shows raspberry, cranberry, and a bit of earth and spice. It’s relatively light in body, with mellow tannins and lively acidity. It’s easy to drink on its own but would go nicely with grilled honey-Sriracha salmon or sage butter gnocchi.
