    Frankland Estate Riesling '19

There will forever be a soft spot in my heart for the great Dry Riesling of Australia.

Ask the people that know me best, and they will tell you about the times that I’ve blind tasted them on a decade old bottle of Dry Riesling from producers such as Grosset, Pikes, and Frankland Estate. Not only does the Riesling of Australia quench your thirst in its youth, but it can gain in complexity in bottle.

Frankland River is an isolated place. Located in the Western reaches of Australia, the region lies inland, 250km east of the well known Margaret River region. Way back in 1956, Dr. Harold Olmo, a prominent American viticulturalist, identified the Frankland River region as having a comparable climate and terroir to that of Bordeaux in France. In 1988, Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam founded Frankland Estate, emboldened by the vision of Dr. Olmo, and inspired by their own travels and work in Bordeaux. Their vineyards, almost 35 hectares in size are planted to a host of varietals, Bordeaux varietals of course, along with Riesling. The vineyards are farmed organically, this 2019 Riesling marks the 10 year anniversary of their certification.

While red wine fans know their famous red “Olmo’s Reward,” the family produces up to five different Riesling each vintage. This wine, is the entry point to the range. 100% estate grown Riesling planted in the classic high ironstone rocky ridge they call “coffee rock.” This comes from younger vines planted in 2006,  as well as some of the original plantings from 1988.

The 2019 is truly a delicious expressive of Frankland Dry Riesling. Big notes of grapefruit, saline, and even when just opened that classic “tennis ball” aroma (yes, I know that sounds weird). On the palate, it has medium weight, but then burst forward with vibrant acidity, a continuation of citrus fruit and a long, drawn out finish.

You can pair this with grilled langoustines, your favorite summer salad, or just drink copious amounts on your front porch. Drink now through 2026.
