Fosso degli Angeli "Cese" Falanghina del Sannio '19
My trip to the region of Campania this past March was truly life changing. The natural beauty of the region alongside the bounty of its food, and of course great wine, made for a memorable first visit. There is a LOT to discover in Campania, and I believe that we as wine consumers and even professionals like myself have a lot to learn.
One of the best visits I had in March was to a small family farm in the Sannio district within the province of Benevento. There I met Marenza Pengue of Fosso degli Angeli. Along with her sister Dina and brother in-law Pasquale, they farm 7 hectares of vineyards and 10 hectares of olives. The vineyards are mostly on calcareous clay soils at an average height of about 450 meters above sea level.
The family has been farming for three generations, although they did not start producing their own wines until 2009. They proudly farm organically, and in the small winery they work with natural yeast and low levels of sulphur dioxide.
There is so much great wine to taste at Fosso degli Angeli, but to start I wanted to introduce you to “Cese,” produced from Falanghina, an ancient grape variety that has been grown for over 2000 years in Sannio.
The 2019 “Cese” marks the tenth anniversary of this wines production, and it is a beautiful and complex wine. Hints of peach pit and marzipan on the nose lead into a beautifully silky mouthfeel. It is fresh and vibrant, with a combination of citrus peel, stone fruit, and almond. Try this with some mozzarella di bufala or pasta alle vongole.
