Foradori "Lezèr" Rosso Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT '22
In the village of Mezzolombardo, in the Dolomites of northern Italy, Elisabetta Foradori somewhat reluctantly began managing her family’s estate after her father’s early passing. But eventually her role in the vineyards and the cellar became infused with a sense of passion and vocation, and her children Emilio, Theo, and Myrtha are all now integral to the estate. With practices including biodynamics (Foradori has been Demeter certified since 2009) and massale selection, and experiments with amphorae, Elisabetta has taken a holistic approach to making wines that are respectful of the soil and the local grapes, and she has gained recognition for her single-vineyard expressions of Teroldego.
“Lezèr” was first made in 2017, a challenging vintage for Foradori after a summer hailstorm damaged its crop of Teroldego. The fruit that Foradori was able to harvest became “Lèzer,” a short-maceration red wine, named for its light color and body. The wine was so successful that the family has continued making it every year, though with some variation in choosing the blend of varieties, the vessels used, and the percentage of whole bunches. The label, too, changes slightly each vintage.
The 2022 “Lezèr” is a blend of about 70% Teroldego, 15% Schiava, 10% Lagrein, and 5% Merlot. The fruit comes from vines scattered throughout the village and beyond, on the sandy, gravelly, alluvial soils that define the terroir of the Dolomites. The average age of the Teroldego vines used to make “Lèzer” is 35 years. The wine spent four months in cement tanks, wooden barrels, and terra-cotta amphorae. Maceration was less than 24 hours in various vessels, and fermentation was carried out spontaneously Thirst quenching and delicious, the wine shows notes of fresh berries and red plum, the acidity is bright and lively, and the tannins are mild. Serve it with a light chill.
