Fattoria Nicolucci “I Mandorli” Romagna Sangiovese Superiore '20

Romagna is a place that I’ve fallen in love with in recent years. The food, the people, its beauty, and yes, of course, its wine.

When it comes to the wine of Romagna, it is really important to understand that the territory is so varied, so terroir-driven, that the region cannot be painted in broad brushstrokes. Mr. Wine Map himself, Alessandro Masnaghetti, even put together a Romagna version dedicated to its Sangiovese.

In my humble opinion, the Sangiovese of Romagna can reach the same heights as the best of Montalcino and Chianti Classico. My trips to Romagna have been ripe with discovery, and over the last few years, I’ve introduced you to wines from Bertinoro and Mercato Saraceno. Now I am really proud to highlight the best producer of Predappio, Fattoria Nicolucci.

Predappio has its own microclimates, its own traditions, and its own history, all of which are reflected in the wine produced at Fattoria Nicolucci di Nicolucci Alessandro.

Alessandro Nicolucci is the fourth-generation winemaker at the family-run farm, located specifically in Predappio Alta. The family has been estate bottling since 1885, although the history of wine in this area dates back to around 1000 B.C. The history is on full display in the old historic cellar, at the base of the local castle.

While we will feature several of the Nicolucci wines in the coming months, I wanted to introduce you to this everyday Sangiovese called “I Mandolori.” Alessandro typically picks the Sangiovese for  this cuvée at the end of September, earlier than the other wines. The vines are planted at south-southeast exposure, in soil mainly composed of chalky clay and sand. The grapes are pressed very gently, fermented with natural yeast, and aged in cement tank.

The resulting wine is a juicy, cherry-scented red, with hints of violets, spice, and minerality. There are soft, grippy tannins, as is typical with Romagna Sangiovese, but they are well incorporated into the fruit. The 2020 is simply delicious. This is a pizza night wine if ever there was one. Don’t miss it!
