Fattoria Nannì "Origini" Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi '19

Fattoria Nannì "Origini" Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi '19

In September we introduced you to Fattoria Nannì’s “Arsicci,” and we’re excited for you to try this Verdicchio as well. While “Arsicci" is the starting point in the two wine line-up at Nannì, “Origini” is the flagship. “Origini,” now in its fourth vintage, has become one of the reference points for Verdicchio in the Marche. In fact, the Italian Wine Guide, Gambero Rosso, has given the “Origini” its prestigious “Tre Bicchieri” award, one of just 13 Verdicchio from the Marche to receive the award.

This past July, Craig had the immense pleasure of returning for a second visit to Fattoria Nannì.

Roberto Cantori is a rising star in the world of Italian wine, yet only a few outside of Le Marche know about his wines.

Located near the town of Apiro, in the province of Macerata, he began his production in 2016, making small amounts of Verdicchio from vineyards around the winery. In total he farms just over 6 hectares and makes around 15,000 bottles.

Roberto is a young winemaker, and although not from a winemaking family, he has incredible respect for the area and its special terroir. When he began his journey to start his own cellar, he had been told of a vineyard farmed by a man whom all the locals thought was crazy. The man was farming his vineyards organically since the 1960s, had planted his vines both north and east facing, basically doing everything outside of the conventional wisdom. Roberto, wanting to farm organically and produce an elegant style of Verdicchio, sought out these vineyards. From these vineyards, Fattoria Nannì was created.

The vines of the local crazy farmer are the back bone of “Origini.” More than 50 years old, they are planted in calcareous soil, at an elevation of 450 meters. The grapes are hand harvested and kept in a refrigerated room to lower the temperature of the grapes. Roberto uses a very gentle pneumatic press to extract the juice, and fermentation is started in stainless steel with a pied de cuve of natural yeast.

The 2019 is an incredible wine. There are fresh notes of lemon and stone fruit on the nose and palate, and the brilliant texture is similar to a Premier Cru Chablis. The combination of fruit, mineral, herbs, acidity, and texture display a complexity rarely found in Verdicchio. We want you to try a bottle of this now, preferably with some simply prepared shellfish, but come back for more. This is a wine you can drink now for its freshness, but it will age for a decade, gaining in complexity.

    An outstanding white wine value!
