Fattoria Nannì "Arsicci" Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi '20
Near the town of Apiro, in the province of Macerata, Roberto Cantori began his production in 2016, making small amounts of Verdicchio from vineyards around the winery. In total he farms just over 6 hectares and makes around 15,000 bottles.
Roberto is a young winemaker, and although not from a winemaking family, he has incredible respect for the area and its special terroir. When he began his journey to start his own cellar, he had been told of a vineyard farmed by a man whom all the locals thought was crazy. The man was farming his vineyards organically since the 1960's, had planted his vines both north and east facing, basically doing everything outside of the conventional wisdom. Roberto, wanting to farm organically and produce an elegant style of Verdicchio, sought out these vineyards. From these vineyards, Fattoria Nannì was created.
“Arsicci” is the starting point in the two wine line-up at Nannì. It is produced from some 8-year-old vines, as well as a parcel containing vines that are over 50 years old. Like all Roberto’s vineyards, they are farmed organically. From harvest on, everything that Roberto does is to preserve the integrity of the grapes. He hand harvests using small bins to transport to a refrigerator, where they are cooled overnight. He uses a pneumatic press, looking for a very soft extraction with the juice going directly to a fermentation tank. He uses a pied de cuve of natural yeast to start fermentation. The wine sits on its fine lees until ready for bottling.
The 2020 Arsicci offers vibrant aromas of lemon, flowers, and thyme. It’s very fresh, with bright acidity and moderate weight on the midpalate, and the finish is long and dry. Enjoy a glass as an aperitif, and try it as well with shellfish.
This is one of the best white wines I tasted on my last trip to Italy! Don't miss this amazing value!
