Fattoria Nannì "Arsicci" Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi '18

Fattoria Nannì "Arsicci" Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi '18

We believe that Verdicchio is perhaps Italy's most noble and complex grape varietal. We've decided to prove it by showcasing this fantastic new wine from a rising star in the Marche.  Back in January, I had the opportunity to take another trip to the Marche, and a deeper dive into the world of Verdicchio. From that trip, two new producers are now in Chicago, Fattoria Coroncino, who is featured in the current $30 and Under, and now Fattoria Nannì. I met winemaker Roberto Cantori at his small cellar located off Contrada Arsicci, near the town of Apiro in the province of Macerata. Since 2016, Roberto has been making small amounts of Verdicchio from vineyards around Apiro. In total he farms just over 6 hectares and makes around 4,000 bottles. Roberto is a young winemaker, and although not from a winemaking family, he has incredible respect for the area and its special terroir. When he began his journey to start his own cellar, he had been told of a vineyard farmed by a man whom all the locals thought was crazy. The man was farming his vineyards organically since the 1960's, had planted his vines both north and east facing, basically doing everything outside of the conventional wisdom. Roberto, wanting to farm organically and produce an elegant style of Verdicchio, sought out these vineyards. From these vineyards, Fattoria Nannì was created. "Arsicci" is the starting point in the two wine line-up at Nannì. It is produced from some 5 year-old vines, as well as a parcel containing over 50 year-old vines. Like all of Roberto's vineyards, they are farmed organically. From harvest on, everything that Roberto does is to preserve the integrity of the grapes. He hand harvests using small bins to transport to a refrigerator where they are cooled overnight. He uses a pneumatic press, looking for a very soft extraction with the juice going directly to a fermentation tank. He uses a pied de cuve of natural yeast to start fermentation. The wine sits on its fine lees till bottling.  The 2018 Arsicci is a truly fantastic white wine. Vibrant aromas of lemon, flowers, thyme, and mineral. Very fresh, with bright acidity, yet still with weight on the mid palate, it finishes long and dry. Great to have a glass of as an aperitif, but also works incredible well with shellfish. Don't miss this!
