Farrside by Farr Pinot Noir' 20
The Farr estate is located about 60 miles southwest of Melbourne, in the Moorabool Valley between Geelong and Ballarat. Grape growing in this region dates back more than two centuries, with Swiss settlers planting Victoria’s first vineyards here in the early 1800s. The rich volcanic soil and continental climate at the estate are key to the high-quality wines produced at the estate.
Gary and Robyn Farr purchased the original property in 1994, eventually expanding to a total of 130 acres—36 of which are under vine, with the rest used for grazing and cropping for cattle and horses. The Farrside vineyard sits on a northeast-facing slope and consists of limestone topped with black volcanic soil. The vines were planted in 2001 and run east-west to protect the fruit from overexposure to the sun. Because the Farrside vineyard has darker soils, and the growing conditions there are cooler, the grapes are picked 10 to 12 days after all others and produce wine that is more intense and energetic. “Farrside” is made with 40–50% whole cluster, in 50%–60% new Allier barrels.
This is one of the true cult wineries of Australia, and a producer that I have been selling for 2 decades. The wines are truly Burgundian in style, and Pinot Noir fans should not miss the very limited amount that we received.
