You really can’t go wrong with any of the Famille Paquet wines, and we’re excited to share another wine from the domaine with you. Since taking over their family’s 12-hectare property in the Mâconnais region of Burgundy, in 2016, the three brothers behind Famille Paquet—Camille, Mathieu, and Jean-Baptiste—have been developing their vineyards into their ideal domaine. They now have almost 30 hectares in multiple appellations in the Mâconnais, in and around Pouilly-Fuissé and the original village of Saint-Véran. This area of Burgundy benefits from a bit more sunshine than its northern neighbors, so the grapes ripen more easily and organic farming is easier, especially compared with Chablis. Using organic principles and a minimal-intervention approach to winemaking, the Paquets are focused on high quality and accessibility, two descriptors seldom used together when talking about wine from Burgundy. The light touch in the winemaking process is also what distinguishes these wines from those typically made in the area. It’s rare to find such classic, elegant expressions of Chardonnay from Burgundy that are also accessible to most of us wine drinkers.
The 2020 “Saint-Véran” is simply lovely, a medium-bodied, dry white wine with ripe orchard fruit and light floral notes, beautifully balanced with an earthy, mineral quality and bright acidity. The fermentation for all the Paquet wines occurs spontaneously, and the light-handed approach is also reflected in the use of oak, with only 20% of the barrels being new, and a transfer from barrel to steel cask after about a year for an additional 6 months of rest before bottling. “Saint-Véran” offers the freshness and versatility that good, youthful Chardonnay from Burgundy should have, and it’s fantastic with a well-curated cheese plate, or with a range of seafood or poultry dishes.
