Ribera del Duero
Dominio de Atauta Ribera del Duero '18
Located in the eastern part of the Castilla y León region, in northern Spain, Ribera del Duero has one of the most extreme continental climates in the country, making grapegrowing challenging. Dominio de Atauta is in the Atauta Valley, in Soria, along the Douro River, and it has some of the oldest vines in Europe, predating phylloxera. The valley is heavily eroded, and although it is small (4 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide), it has a great diversity of soils. Rainfall in the area is low, and there is a large temperature range between night and day during the months of grape ripening, which is ideal for vine cultivation and grape ripening.
The 2018 Dominio de Atauta Ribera del Duero is made from 100% Tinto Fino (the name used locally for Tempranillo), selected from a range of vineyards that represent the various terroirs of the Atauta Valley. The vine age ranges from 120 to 160 years, and elevations range from 940 meters in the valley bottom to over 1,000 meters in moorland areas. Soil compositions also vary, including calcareous rock with pebbles, sandy loam, and clayey loam.
The grapes from each location were vinified separately, in wooden vats and concrete tanks. The wine was aged for about 16 months in French oak barrel, 15% of them new.
This is a superb value given its incredibly old-vine fruit. It drinks well now, but can also age for several years to come. Don't miss it!
