Domaine La Madura "Classic" Rouge Saint-Chinian '19

    Languedoc Roussillon

Domaine La Madura "Classic" Rouge Saint-Chinian '19

Having just spent a week in the region of St. Chinian in the Western Languedoc, there is so much I could say about the special qualities of Domaine La Madura.

This is exactly the type of winery that I love to share with my clients. A true labor of love, Cyril and Nadia Bourgne purchased existing vineyards in 1998. They made wine for many years in a tiny cellar located on the outskirts of the village. What is special about the region of St. Chinian, and one of the things that drew Cyril to the region, is the diversity of its soil. Most appellations in the Languedoc are mono-terroir, one type of soil. That is not the case in this region, and the family has planted Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvèdre in the different parcels, of different soil types. Blending is a huge part of what makes the La Madura wines what they are.

So much has changed in the 13+ years that I have been visiting Domaine La Madura. A new winery, more vineyards, and one thing that hasn’t changed, you still can find Cyril in the vineyards every day.

Domaine La Madura has a small range of wines, that starts with a “Classic” white and red. Last month we featured the white, and this month we are excited to share the new vintage of “Classic” Rouge.

This vintage is composed of 37% Carignan, 33% Grenache, 16% Mourvèdre, and 14% Syrah. The Carignan and Grenache are aged in concrete, and the Mourvèdre and Syrah are aged in old oak barrels. The wine has fresh herbal tones, bright fruit, and hints of spice. There is a striking minerality on the palate, with fabulously integrated and fine-grained tannins. Try it with grilled lamb chops, chicken, or sausage, and a medley of grilled vegetables.

This is an outstanding value, and I would highly encourage my customers to stock up on 6 or 12 of these, so that you can age it over the next 3-7 years. I just enjoyed an amazing bottle of the 2011 “Classic” Rouge, still showing incredibly well after a decade in bottle!
