Languedoc Roussillon
In 1998 Domaine La Madura bought a small vineyard, 13 hectares in size, with vines spread over the different terroirs of Saint-Chinian. This diversity is in part what accounts for the complexity of the estate’s blends, yet equally important is respect for the environment and the maintenance of biodiversity in the vineyards, which are central to La Madura’s work. The estate is perhaps more well known for its vineyards planted to traditional red Rhône varieties, yet it also grows Sauvignon Blanc. Winemaker Cyril Bourgne worked with the grape in Bordeaux for many years and believed his plots were perfect for Sauvignon Blanc vines. Although the variety is not native to the region, the vines thrived, and he decided to make two white wines from these grapes (with the addition of a bit of Piquepoul). Classic is the younger version of the two.
The 2020 “Classic” white is made of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Piquepoul. The grapes are picked early to ensure freshness, and the wine is fermented in stainless steel. Fruit notes of lime and white peach are balanced by aromas of green bell pepper and pine. The mouthfeel is round and the finish is long and driven by the bright acidity. Try it with a a platter of grilled vegetables and shrimp, or any grilled fish. It’s also a great option for green curry and dishes with spices such as turmeric and ginger.
