    The great Cabernet Franc of the Loire Valley are often seen as "everyday" type wines. It is true that when you go to a bistro in Paris, Loire Valley reds are typically the best values on the menu, as well as the quintessential food pairing wines. There are producers that seek to highlight the best vineyards in the Central Loire Valley, and produce wines that are the equivalent to the great First Growth of Bordeaux or Grand Cru of Burgundy. Thierry Germain grew up in Bordeaux, in the shadows of those aforementioned famed producers. He moved to the Loire Valley as a young man, and was influenced by the Foucault family of Clos Rougeard fame. Over the past two decades he has risen to prominence in the appellation of Saumur. He produces a staggering range of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc. Always an advocate of organic farming, he was the first certified biodynamic producer in Saumur in 2002. "Clos de l'Echelier" is a very special bottling from Thierry. The fruit comes from a single parcel, a wall vineyard in the commune of Dampierre sur Loire. 40+ year-old Cabernet Franc vines are planted on a mixture of clay and limestone. The grapes are fermented in tank, and it is important to note, that the extraction is purposefully soft, as Thierry is looking for finesse. The wine is aged in 600 Demi-muid and 1200 liter founder for one year. Thierry works hard to show elegance and bring an almost-Burgundian sensibility to this wine. This has been fully achieved, with beautiful wild strawberry notes, mineral, and cracked pepper on the nose. The wine is soft up front on the palate, with medium fine-grained tannins on the mid-palate. This wine calls out for food, hangar steak au poivre or cassoulet would be ideal.
