Domaine Delalex Marin "Clos du Pont" Vin de Savoie '15

Domaine Delalex Marin "Clos du Pont" Vin de Savoie '15

Why is it that you rarely find the white wines of Savoie on wine lists and shelves at retailers in the United States? That's because most of the locals, as well as tourists visiting the beautiful Lac Léman, drink it themselves! We are very fortunate that in Chicago we receive a handful of the top producers, albeit in very small quantities. I had a chance to meet with Delalex family back in April, and learn firsthand why their wines are so special.

The family owns 8 hectares, all in the cru of Marin on the French side of Lac Léman, not far from the Swiss border. The special grape of this region is Chasselas, and this estate's vines range from 10 to 70 years in age, facing either Southwest or directly South.

Delalex is unique among many of its neighbors in that the wines do not go through malolactic fermentation. This results in laser-beam like acidity, and showcases the fruit and mineral aspects defined by its terroir.

This single-vineyard Chasselas wine is from a very special steep and stony site, with the vines planted in the glacial moraine. The wine has become more and more complex with a little bottle age and is a treat to sip. Soft mineral character with hints of stone fruit, and flowers. Bright and focused on the palate, even though this has taken on a little weight as it has aged in bottle. It’s softness is pleasing, but it has retained its structure and would be perfect with lemony grilled shrimp and a summer herb-y pilaf or a simple snack of marcona almonds and alpine cheese.
