Burgundy
Jean-Paul Brun is located in Charnay, a village in the southern Beaujolais, just north of Lyon, in a beautiful area known as the Terres Dorées, or Region of Golden Stones. Brun, the owner and winemaker at this 60-plus-hectare family estate, started with just 4 hectares of vines. He makes “old-style” wines, believing that the charm of the grapes is best expressed by the use of indigenous yeasts for fermentation. His wines are made to be pleasurable—light, fruity, and delicious.
The Beaujolais Blanc is made solely from Chardonnay. On his home estate in hilly Charnay, Jean-Paul Brun started planting Chardonnay in 1983 on the sandy clay-limestone soils. The farming is organic and harvest is by hand. The bunches are destemmed and fermented with native yeasts and without sulfur in concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, and the lees are stirred periodically. The wine is aged in steel and concrete and bottled in the spring after harvest with a light filtration and minimal sulfur. You can expect fresh aromas of apples, pears, and lemon around a core of minerality. Pair this with delicate fish, roast chicken, to roasted root vegetables.
