    When talking about the great traditional red wines of the Southern Rhône Valley, Gigondas is a name to know. The Dentelles de Montmirail mountains run through the appellation, splitting it in two. Gigondas gained appellation status in 1971, previously part of the Côtes du Rhône-Villages appellation. Grenache is the workhorse varietal of the region, although it may not exceed 80% of the blend. The resulting wine tends to be powerful, spice driven, and often times age worthy.

    Domaine de Piaugier is a 30 hectare winery located in the Sablet district of the Côtes du Rhône-Villages. Run by Jean-Marc and Sophie Autran, I’ve always admired the way they produce quintessentially powerful wines, yet with a great degree of finesse.

    Their Gigondas is one of the best values in the appellation. The 2018 is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and 15% Syrah. The vines range between 40-45 years of age and are planted in clay and limestone soil with a high proportion of sand. One of the secrets of this Gigondas is that the Piaguier parcels are on the “cooler” side of the Dentelles de Montmirail, a key element in its balanced profile.

    The grapes were pressed and fermented in concrete tanks. The wine is then aged in 30 HL Foudre for 18 months before bottling.

    Beautiful aromatics combining dark cherry, blueberry, lavender and spice notes. Full-bodied, with a core of rich red berry fruit, licorice notes, soft dusty tannins and a long, complex finish. Pair this with red meat, from duck breast to rib eye, this will be a great match. Drink your bottle now, and come back for some to age in your cellar as this will continue to develop over the next decade.
