Do Ferreiro "Rebisaca" '20
Do Ferreiro is one of the best producers of Albariño, especially in Galicia, where producing world-class white wine is no easy task. This cool climate demands a lot of work in the vineyard, and when over 175 different plots of vines are being farmed by hand, it adds to the complications. The plots are all located in the heart of the Salnés subzone of Rías Baixas. The valley’s proximity to the ocean, its natural protection by mountain ranges, and its decomposed granitic soil have helped it earn its reputation as the ideal region in Rías Baixas for producing profound, terruño-driven Albariño wines capable of improving in bottle. Farming is practicing organic, and fermentations are exclusively carried out by native yeasts.
“Rebisaca” is a limited-production blend, and the only non-100% Albariño wine that Do Ferreiro makes. Winemaker Manuel Méndez blends 25% Treixadura and 5% Loureiro from the Rebisaca vineyard, in the Condado do Tea subzone, with 70% Albariño from his vineyards in the Salnés. The average age of the vines is over 65 years old. The varieties are separately fermented with natural yeasts (a pied de cuve from the winery’s historic Cepas Vellas vineyard) in stainless steel, then blended after fermentation. The wine spends nine months on its lees in tank, without bâtonnage.
Rebisaca has an electric palate, combining the saline minerality of Albariño grown on granite soils and the exotic fruit of Treixadura and Loureiro. It has a balanced mouthfeel with the balsamic and herbal touch of the Loureiro and a nice bitter, mineral twist on the finish, which is very long. Incredible when paired with raw shellfish or seafood, especially simply prepared crab legs. Rebisaca will improve with age, gaining in complexity and intensity.
Please note, this is the last vintage of Rebisaca to be produced. Do Ferreiro is using these spectacular vineyards for some upcoming new labels. This is an absolute steal at the price.
