Do Ferreiro "Rebisaca" '17
We have a very special treat for fans of the $20 & Under wine club this month.
Do Ferreiro, in my humble opinion, the best producer of Albariño, is not a winery we can typically feature in our $20 & Under sampler. Producing world-class white wine in Galicia is no easy task. This cool climate demands a lot of work in the vineyard, and when you farm over 175 different plots of vines, it adds to the complications.
Yet, with the new vintage and new label of this wine being released, plus our decades-long support of the winery, we were offered a special deal that we are passing along to you. Normally $28 a bottle, this wine will be $20 through the month of October.
“Rebisaca” is the one non-100% Albariño wine that Do Ferreiro makes. Winemaker Manuel Méndez blends 25% Treixadura and 5% Loureiro from the Rebisaca vineyard, in the Condado do Tea subzone, with 70% Albariño from his vineyards in the Salnés. The average age of the vines is over 65 years old. The varieties are separately fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel, then blended after fermentation. The wine spends nine months on its lees in tank without bâtonnage.
The 2017 is drinking magnificently, as it has always been a wine that benefits from time in the bottle. The nose is gorgeous, with exotic fruit notes from the Treixadura and Loureiro, along with citrus and minerality from the Albariño. It is medium in weight yet vibrant, and it is an incredible food-pairing wine. I love this with simply prepared crab legs. There is no better match.
