Do Ferreiro Albariño '22
Do Ferreiro is an iconic Albariño produce located in the hills on the outskirts of Sanxenxo in the Val de Salnès sub zone of Rías Baixas. The winery was founded in 1973, when Gerardo Méndez made small amounts of wine for himself and his neighbors. By 1986 he was labelling his wine as Do Ferreiro. Gerardo and his father Francisco, were a huge part of helping form the appellation of Rías Baixas in 1988.
Today, Gerardo’s son Manuel makes the wine, and he is assisted by his daughter Encarna. They are one of the nicest families you will ever meet.
Do Ferreiro farms over 175 different plots of Albariño in order to produce this wine. The vineyards are farmed sustainably, with no pesticides or fertilizers used in the vineyards (a difficult challenge given the notably wet conditions of Galicia). The grapes are hand picked, destemmed, and given a cold soak before fermentation with natural yeast in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged on its fine lees for at least six months before bottling.
The aromatics on the 2022 are stunning, a wine you can almost sit and smell all day. Notes of fresh citrus, lemon, tangerine, alongside a vibrant saline note. The palate has both concentration and freshness, with lingering minerality and fruit notes. This is calling out for simply prepared langoustines, oysters, or crab.
I very rarely recommend buying a full case of any wine, but this is certainly one of them. Drink some now, but hold some and drink a bottle every year over the next decade. Albariño is one of the world's most noble grape varieties, and Do Ferreiro is one of its most special producers.
