What makes the Vila Nova vineyard so unusual is its proximity to the Atlantic. Very few vineyards in Portugal are just 5 km from the sea. If you combine that with the beautiful 50 year-old vines planted in clay/limestone soil, and the fact that Baga is one of the world's most underrated grape varietals, you have a truly great wine in the making.
Vinification is simple. They partially destem the grapes, then ferment with natural yeasts in 1000 liter tanks. It is aged in used Burgundy casks for 15 months.
If you are drinking this now, please give it a little oxygen and decant for an hour prior to drinking. Pretty aromas of dark raspberry, herbs and spice, lead into a fresh and vibrant palate, chock full of red fruit, soft tannins, and "sous bois" (the sexier way to say forest floor).
While there is only one other vintage to compare this to, given the ability of old-vine Baga to age, we feel this will drink well now through 2025+. If drinking now, pair it with grilled duck breasts and porcini mushrooms.
