Corte Sant'Alda Valpolicella "Ca' Fiui" '18

Corte Sant'Alda Valpolicella "Ca' Fiui" '18

When you taste a wine for the first time, and it happens to be of appellation defining excellence, it’s a big deal.

Such is the case with my experience with this truly magnificent red from Corte Sant’Alda.

Part of the reason I haven’t extensively featured Valpolicella at the store is that much of what is available in Chicago is of mediocre to poor quality. Instead of bad mouthing the rest, let me tell you about the best.

Marinella Camerani is a leader in the region in terms of not just quality, but also organic farming and biodynamic practices. She began this relationship with her vines after a terrible harvest, that led her to believe that more could and needed to be done. This process began in 1986, and over the years she has done extensive research on soil types in her vineyard, took different approaches with vineyard density and trellising, and has provided a lot of leadership in organic and biodynamic farming.

Her winery is located in the Mezzane Valley, which lies in the Eastern sector of the Verona province. This very fertile valley is an agricultural jewel box, with not just grapes, by olive groves, cherry and chestnut trees dotting the landscape. It provides the perfect environment for the local grapes Corvina Grossa, Corvina Veronese, Molinara and Rondinella.

The “Ca’ Fiui” is a blend of the aforementioned grapes from four vineyards on the property. Harvest took place in early October, with fermentation in large oak vats with native yeast. It is aged in the same barrels for 6 to 10 months before bottling.

This is absolutely textbook Valpolicella. Beautiful cherry notes emerge from the glass alongside hints of green peppercorns and red licorice. The palate is seamless, bright, silky, fresh and long. This is a great opportunity for those looking for summer reds, that aren’t made from Pinot or Gamay. Pair with grilled swordfish with a vegetable barigoule.

    Don’t miss this!
