Coroncino "Il Bacco" Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi '18
Context is a big factor in the enjoyment of wine. Once you've had a particular wine in the right setting, with the right food, it all just make sense.
Such is the case with this excellent example of Verdicchio from Fattoria Coroncino.
The winery was founded by Lucio and Fiorella Canestrari in 1981. The winery is located in Staffolo, in the heart of the Castelli dei Jesi zone. They own around 17 hectares of vineyards, and produce about 50,000 bottles a year, the majority of which is consumed locally in the the best restaurants of the region. Since its inception the family has practiced organic viticulture. It didn't take a trend for Lucio to understand that the best grapes come from deep-rooted, organically grown vines. Over 40 years later, now joined by his son Vale, they continue to produce authentic Verdicchio.
"Il Bacco" is the first in the line-up at Coroncino. It is produced entirely from Verdicchio, from estate vineyards in and around Staffolo. This is a full-bodied, uncompromising style of Verdicchio. Comples nose of lemon peel, almond skin and mineral. Full-bodied with an almost creamy mid-palate, soft peach notes, finishing with a briny, almost umami note.
Enjoying this Verdicchio with the right foods is important. Personally, I like to keep it simple, with some freshly shucked oysters, steamed mussels, or even just with some simple hard sheeps milk cheese.
