    Rall Grenache Blanc '19

    Rall Grenache Blanc '19

While I don't typically like using words like "best" or 'greatest," I am clear in my belief that Donovan Rall is the best winemaker in South Africa. Whether it is his wines under the Rall label, or his work for his friends at Vuurberg, there is never a wine produced that I don't enjoy. Donovan founded his winery in 2008, starting by producing two wines, a white wine blend and a red wine blend, with fruit sourced from old vines primarily from Swartland and Stellenbosch.

In the winery, Donovan tries to keep things simple, fermenting with natural yeast, using his small basket press, and aging typically in older oak barrels.

This is one of my absolute favorite expressions of Grenache Blanc from anywhere in the world. It just happens to be from own-rooted bush vines grown in Pieknierskloof in the Western Cape of South Africa. Grenache Blanc hasn't existed in South Africa for a long time, and you can count on one hand the number of producers who work with it.  Donovan has a truly adept touch with the varietal. Part of the juice is left on its skins for a week in old oak barrels. The other part, fermented in concrete eggs. The indigenous yeast strains used give this wine a delicate but leesy texture never being too rich.

Gorgeous nose with big saline notes, citrus, plum and flowers. This has medium weight, but yet is carried by its beautiful acidity.  Honestly, this is an insane value. So please don't miss it, it won't be around very long.
