Poggerino "L'Aurora" Rosé '22
In the heart of the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany sits this beautiful winery surrounded by forests and olive trees, speckled with old farmhouses and a 12th-century church, giving the property a refined sense of antiquity. The winery has been farmed by the Lanza family since the 1970s and is primarily focused on the titan of Tuscan grapes: Sangiovese. Farming 100% organically and using no pesticides or herbicides, the Lanza family also practice biodynamic viticulture at their farm.
This rosato is made from 100% Sangiovese, and the way in which it is produced merits extra explanation. Lanza harvests 50% of the grapes at the end of August/beginning of September. The first harvest is a late green harvest. The alcoholic fermentation begins with natural yeasts and proceeds at cool temperatures. The second harvest is used for a saignée, made the same day the grapes are harvested, usually at the end of September/early October. The must is then combined with that of the first harvest, and the fermentation proceeds at around 55-57 degrees Fahrenheit. The wine is made only in stainless steel tank.
The result is a wine that has amazing balance, with great acidity from that early picking, as well as richness and intensity from the saignée. Beautiful aromas of red berries, flowers, and spice. The palate is medium in weight, yet cut by vibrant acidity, with great length. Enjoy this on its own, or with grilled pork loin coated in rosemary.
