Colterenzio Pinot Nero Riserva "St. Daniel" '16

    Alto Adige

Colterenzio Pinot Nero Riserva "St. Daniel" '16

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most popular grape varieties. As such, it is planted throughout the world, including some unexpected places. I am always amazed at how Pinot Noir reflects terroir. While the underlying structure of the varietal can be relatively similar, its aromas and flavors truly take on the personality of the vineyard it comes from. So it is always exciting to introduce you to a different perspective on Pinot Noir. Alto Adige, located in Northeast Italy has a several decade old relationship with growing Pinot Noir. Today around 500 hectares are planted in the region, which is almost 9% of the region's total vineyard output. Most of the vineyards are located on hillsides, at elevations of anywhere between 300 to 500 meters. In Alto Adige, may growers only own an hectare or two of vineyards. As such cooperatives have been formed throughout the region. Alto Adige likely has the best grouping of cooperatives of any wine region in the world. Colterenzio is a cooperative with around 300 grower members. It was founded in 1960, and today farms 300 hectares of vineyards, 65% of white grape varieties, and 35% of red grape varieties.  I'm excited to introduce you to the Riserva Pinot Nero bottling from Colterenzio called "St. Daniel." Sourced from 15 to 20 year old vines grown between 350 and 450 meters above sea level. The soil is volcanic with glacial moraine deposits.  The grapes are destemmed, softly pressed and briefly cold-macerated. The fermentation takes place over 14 days, and afterwards is racked into a combination of 35 hl casks and barriques.  After bottling the wine is aged for a year in bottle. The 2016 "St. Daniel" Pinot Nero has beautiful aromatics. Notes of wild flowers, blue, red and black fruits and spice. On the palate, this is ethereal, its light-bodied entry slowly building with fine grained tannins. It finishes with fruit and savory spice notes. Pair this beautiful Pinot Noir with lamb chops or grilled duck breasts.
