Colli di Lapio Fiano di Avellino '18

Colli di Lapio Fiano di Avellino '18

Clelia Romano is a local of the village of Lapio, considered the “grand cru” growing area for the white variety Fiano. The windblown slopes of Campania’s mountains provide the perfect home for this under appreciated grape. Since the time of the Romans, or possibly even the Greeks before them, this has been the classical vine of the area. This is made entirely in stainless steel leading to an incredibly pure wine with a crispness that makes us think of spring blossoms and snap peas. Easygoing and charming. Her take is the benchmark for me, although it is a relatively new winery whose first vintage was 1994. It is fresh, aromatic, and unabashedly quaffable. It is also seriously complex, engaging and alive in a way that may surprise you based on the old school label. Poached pear, lemon zest, jasmine tea, hazelnut and honey contribute to an engaging nose. On the palate it is stony and ravishingly clean with a cutting acidity that leaves just a trace of beautiful Italian bitterness on the finish. For an aperitif snack I’d recommend Melon and Prosciutto drizzled with fresh olive oil or it would pair beautifully with gently cooked Black Cod filet in a dashi broth with wilted greens for dinner. This wine is irresistible now, but having tasted it with 5+ years in bottle, this will develop into an even more mineral inflected, rich and nearly Chablis-like wine with age. If you love the humble wines of Domaine Pepiere in Muscadet or Do Ferreiro’s beautiful Albariño's, this is for you.
