Provence
Côtes de Provence is perhaps the world’s most famous region for rosé (with over 80% of the wine produced in the appellation falling into that category), and Clos Cibonne is regarded as one of the area’s greatest producers. The main grapes are Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and a little-known grape called Tibouren. The history of the property dates back to 1797, when the Roux family purchased the land from Jean-Baptiste de Cibon, captain of the royal marines under Louis XVI. The winery remains in the family to this day, and they make one red wine and five rosés.
“Tentations” is a perfect entry point into authentic Côtes de Provence rosé, showing the easy drinking yet high-quality side of the style. It’s made with exceptional fruit, some from young Tibouren vines at Clos Cibonne, as well as Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah grown by farmers in prime spots in the villages of La Crau and Carqueiranne, with whom the family has long-standing relationships. The blend is about 50% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 15% Syrah, and 15% Tibouren. Most of the fruit for this cuvée is sourced from the neighboring vineyards, while the Tibouren is estate fruit but from the younger vines. Organic. All vinification is done entirely in-house by the experienced hands of Olivier Deforges, a fifth-generation winemaker and manager of the estate. “Tentations” is focused on expressing freshness and represents one of the best quality-to-value ratios in the Côtes de Provence region.
“Tentations” has a light salmon-pink color and aromas of fresh strawberry, pomegranate, orange peel, and violets, with savory, dried herb flavors providing balance and depth to the fruit and floral character. The weight and texture of the wine are complemented by refreshing acidity and a touch of salinity. There’s hardly a better pairing than crêpes au saumon fumé—crêpes with smoked salmon, crème fraîche, capers, and herbs. This is a lovely rosé, just in time for the spring and the summer months ahead.
