Chéreau Carré "Château l'Oiselinière de la Ramée" Muscadet '19

How many Muscadet fights have I been in during my life? Difficult to ballpark, but let's say several.

I, along with a handful of other wine nerds I know, am a great defender of the not-so-famous wine called Muscadet. Melon de Bourgogne grows near the city of Nantes, on the Western end of the Loire Valley. Producers in the region often make several different bottlings under the appellation name, Muscadet Sèvre et Maine. It has forever been the mainstay wine of bistro's throughout Paris, who often pair it with shellfish, and whose customers drink it in copious amounts.

The fighting comes in because many dismiss Muscadet as a "nothing wine." Light, innocuous, basically the wine equivalent of Smartwater.

Not true I say. Find great Muscadet from the hands of the best of the region, and you have something that will speak to your very soul.

Domaine Chéreau Carré is one of those names to know. The father and daughter team of Bernard and Louise Chéreau are truly firing on all cylinders these days.

"Château de l’Oiselinière is a 10ha vineyard that has belonged to the family since 1960. The vines here are planted on a sunny, south-facing orthogneiss dome, near the village of Vertou, directly on the confluence of the Sèvre and Maine rivers. The vineyard is in a very idyllic setting within a natural clos, protected on one side by the surrounding woods and on the other sides by the river (which also moderates temperatures for even ripening). One would struggle to find a more natural and biologically diverse vineyard in the region."

This wine, Château l’Oiselinière de la Ramée is produced from 40 year-old vines, fermented in stainless steel, aged on its lees for six months in concrete tanks and aged in bottle for 12 months before release.

The 2019 is excellent, a vintage with good ripeness, yet incredible acidity. This is always a personal favorite of mine, and such a great value!
