    Cieck Erbaluce di Caluso '20

    Cieck Erbaluce di Caluso '20

The Cieck estate cultivates 13 hectares of vineyards in San Giorgio Canavese, Piedmont, between the towns of Turin and Ivrea. The grapes are almost all Erbaluce, an ancient white variety native to the Canavese district, but Cieck also harvests the native varieties Nebbiolo, Barbera, Neretto, and Freisa. What makes this area special is the use of the pergola vine training system, which creates large canopies in the vineyard and requires workers to reach up to harvest the grapes.

The estate was established in 1985, and initially the project was just for fun. Remo, a typewriter designer for Olivetti and the son of farmers, traveled to France to learn how to make sparkling wine. In 1985, he set up the estate with just a few hectares of grapes and vinified his first harvest. Today, the estate is run by Domenico Caretto, an agronomist who takes care of the vineyards and the cellar; Lia Falconieri, who handles administration, the commercial side of things, and communication; and Remo Falconieri, who founded the estate. At the age of 80-plus, he’s the first to arrive in the cellar every morning, at eight o’clock.

The 2020 Cieck Erbaluce di Caluso is a still white wine, and Remo considers it to be the purest expression of the grape, where minerality and freshness perfectly represent the Canavese terroir. It comes from a selection of grapes from different estate-owned vineyard, with vines that are approximately 50 years old, planted in rocky soil, with south and southwest exposure. The wine is aged for four months in stainless steel and bottled at the beginning of spring each year. It opens with aromas of orange and lemon zest, peach, and apricot, and a hint of fresh herbs. The palate is fruit forward, lively, and youthful, with a vibrant acidity that keeps you wanting more. Try it with sharp, salty cheeses or freshly shucked oysters.
